An affiliate program is based on Affiliate marketing, which is a type of marketing where businesses reward affiliates for visitors they send to the business’s site via the affiliate’s own marketing efforts. Most merchants offer around 5-10% affiliate commission on each sale. An affiliate system is what handles the affiliate accounts, the tracking of the traffic affiliates have sent to the site, and the monetary rewards the affiliates have earned for their efforts.
This is how the system works: 1. The affiliate shares a referral link – on social media (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest), blog, email newsletter, website or video channel (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion) and also by ‘word-of-mouth’. 2. The customer clicks on the affiliate link and gets redirected to the online store. He then makes a purchase. 3. The store awards a referral commission on the sale. 4. The affiliate promotes the store and keeps sharing and the cycle starts all over!
A referral link is the URL affiliates use to promote a website or a product. It has the affiliate ID or username appended to the URL so a specific affiliate can be tracked when a visitor or customer visits the website. If the customer completes a conversion (i.e. a sale, or account signup), a referral will be generated and the affiliate will be awarded a commission.
Affiliate marketing is not like an MLM pyramid scheme. Unlike MLMs, you don't pay anything to become an affiliate. You pick and decide which products or services you want to sell and the merchant will give you a commission for selling them. Most of the times affiliates will also be awarded a signup bonus!
